Yinytjapana - Dolphin

from UP FROM THE DEEP by Tunnel Number Five

/

about

As Sarah whirls the “ocean” Guwanbal sings a Gälpu manikay which tells of a dolphin giving birth near the shore. Swimming north to Raragala island, mother and child call out as they pass islands in the Arafura sea. Adrian on yidaki is “mother dolphin” while Anne’s short shakuhachi plays the calf. The plan was to “swim” together to one end of the tunnel, but somehow shakuhachi and yidaki swam to opposite ends! As baby shakuhachi became separated from mother yidaki, her cries became more plaintive. Guwanbal’s lyrics artfully reflect this unexpected turn of events.

lyrics
