Emambo - Waiting for you

from UP FROM THE DEEP by Tunnel Number Five

/

about

Heralded by yidaki calls reminiscent of Papuan conch horn, Henk sings a
West Papuan song Emambo (by Arnold Ap from the Mambesak folk group)
segueing to Awin Barbarina (by Sam Kapisa of the Sandia folk group from
Biak). With the flag of independence painted on his chest and Bird of Paradise feathers on his head, Henk walks the length of the tunnel with wife Amanda, daughter Regina and Ernie on violin, paying hommage to two much loved songwriters killed by Indonesian elite forces.
A woman goes looking for her missing husband. Walking through the village and into the forest, she calls out his name. ‘Where are you?’ He’d set a trap for the cassowary, but the powerful cassowary was waiting for him.

lyrics

Emambo simbo. Mambo yaya yaya e, Emambo yaya e

Emambo, I have been waiting for you... but you don’t come home
