14. Encroachment
violin (Emily), D shakuhachi

This violin has a menacing, relentless quality that reminds me of the invasion of buffel grass. Travelling from Uluru to Alice, I met many tourists complaining of not sighting emus. “Where are they?” A local explained about the cattle farmers’ use of buffel grass and its destruction of native grasses and woodland. Buffel easily bursts into flame, incinerating trees at temperatures way higher than a native grass fire - too high for them to regenerate. Buffel has deep roots and bounces back from fire very quickly. With their favourite native seeds and grasses gone and their sweet watering holes fouled by cattle, emus and other native mammals, reptiles and birds are forced to seek asylum elsewhere.
