Gapu - Healing Water

from UP FROM THE DEEP by Tunnel Number Five

/

about

Guwanbal wrote this song in the 1980s in the Dhaŋu language of the Gälpu clan. It is a much-loved Gospel song sung by other Yolŋu clans as well. It tells of the water in the river Djärimi, seen as a gift from heaven. Guwanbal explains: the Creator may be encountered whenever we touch or drink water. Water heals our inner being, taking us on a journey back to our ancestors.

lyrics

Garrkuluk Djulararri lurryun yaka. Bäpawuŋ goŋ’buy mäluwuŋ Garraywuŋ,

Healing water coming down. Djärimi river, rainbow-coloured,
from our heavenly father above. Jesu, Jesu. Praise to the heavenly father.
Heal us, cleanse us with your healing water.
