Lorrpu - White Cockatoo

from UP FROM THE DEEP by Tunnel Number Five

/

about

The songmen stood silently until Guwanbal’s first sustained note. The 100-
strong audience sat mesmerised. Then Guyundula gently joined in from 30m down the tunnel. This is a Gumatj clan song of the Yirritja moiety to which Guyundula belongs, sung in the Dhuwala language. It is a snippet from a song line that normally accompanies dance with bilma (sticks) & yidaki. It tells of the white cockatoo, a messenger who calls to the people, warning them that a Gumatj Spirit Man comes this way.
