Marrpan Miyapunu - Green Sea Turtle

from UP FROM THE DEEP by Tunnel Number Five

/

about

Ocean swell pushing air through small fissures in the bauxite coast resonates within the dark recesses of the tunnel. A field recording made by David Matthews in NE Arnhem Land blends with shakuhachi and cello as Guwanbal sings of a large green sea turtle, feeding on seaweed and rising to the surface with the incoming tide. Guyundula continues this manikay (song), then Henk enters, singing in the Biak language of West Papua: Awine, Mekem Bedairo, arorooo! — Mother! Listen to the falling rain. Oh it is wonderful!

lyrics

Ya-a-a yuŋgultja garrwartjin, marrpan garrwartjin, marrpan miyapunu.
Ya-a-a marrpan nuŋgultja miyapunu Manawara. Marrpan.
Dha-wunydjulu wunydjulma. Marrpan miyapunu. Wunydjulma miyapunu garrwartjin. Dantja-dantjaŋuru miyapunu ŋarruŋan

Rising up, up from the deep, a green sea turtle surfaces
