Tsuru no Sugomori 鶴の巣籠

from Various tracks by Anne Norman

/

about

I studied Tsuru no Sugomori (Nesting Cranes) with Tajima Tadashi in 1991 in Yokohama. Tajima learnt it from Yokoyama Katsuya who studied with Watazumi. Recorded in 1994.
It is a unique piece from the 'honkyoku'(zen meditation) repertoire of the shakuhachi. Unique in that it depicts the voice and the activities of the crane through several highly distinctive techniques - flutter tonguing, multiple trilling, alternative fingering and harmonics - techniques that are rarely employed in other honkyoku. The majority of 'honkyoku' are quite abstract meditations, but this piece reflects a popular theme in Japanese music and art, that of 'Nature'. Beginning with an empty pre-dawn sky, the piece is said to journey through the day, depicting the parent birds protecting and feeding their young. Many versions have been passed down through different lineages. This version of Nesting Cranes is of the Watazumi-do lineage.
I often perform this piece walking around the audience, and I usually say something about our interconnectedness with our environment and nature and invite the audience to listen with their imaginations as well as their ears and hearts.
