Wärrarra - Dhuwa Sunset

from UP FROM THE DEEP by Tunnel Number Five

/

about

The Yolŋu world is divided into two moieties: Dhuwa and Yirritja. All the clans, animals, in fact everything in the land, even the stages of the setting sun are divided. Dhuwa clans sing of the sunset from the moment the sun drops below the horizon. Guwanbal invites the audience to click their fingers along with his bilma (sticks). Adrian accompanies on yidaki (didjeridu).

lyrics

Ganamba nyir’nyiryun djanbultjanpul, gulŋiyan ŋarruŋ ganamba,
djanbultjanpul wukulirri, warrkmaŋgan guyuwan, nyir’nyiryun ŋarruŋ
djanbultjanpul. Ŋunha nyir’nyiryuwan wukulirri, ŋunha guyuwan nyir’nyiryun

The setting sun, just over there... the sun has set.
