Water Spirits

from UP FROM THE DEEP by Tunnel Number Five

/

about

Rain falls on the escarpment overlooking Darwin harbour, leaching into tunnels built to store oil to fuel ships and planes of WWII. Due to water leaks, these tunnels never actually stored oil. More than 70 years later, the sound of gurgling water echoes through from Tunnel No.6, accompanying the pizzicato of the “Stringlines” trio of Anja, Ernie and Netanela performing before a seated audience in Tunnel No.5. Thanks to leaking water, and a few adventurous souls, we now have a magnificent and querky concert hall, not a subterranean oil tank.
