Yolngu Crying for the Land

by Bärra Band & Anne Norman

/

about

An impromptu jam session in a rehearsal room at Yolngu Radio station in 2015. I was visiting my friend Gaia in Nhulunbuy, who introduced me to members of the Bärra Band, and they invited me in to jam together just one hour before I was to fly back to Darwin.

I am playing a long (2.4) shakuhachi with the voices of Sebastian Guyundula Burarrwanga and Dion Marimanul Gurruwiwi.
Thanks for this fabulous chance to play with you.

The following year I performed with Sebastian and his uncle—senior Songman Jason Gurruwiwi at the 2016 Tunnel Number Five: festival of underground music in Darwin.

“Thank you for this beautiful music. I have listed to this track multiple times in recent months and am always completely swept away by it. It is unlike anything else, and truly conjures the unspeakable magic of Yolngu country.”  Luna Ma Narama
