Displaced 亡命

from self-isolation by Anne M Norman

/

about

Displaced is a homage to the peoples and creatures of the world, who, for whatever reason, have been involuntarily relocated, or had their "place" damaged or destroyed.

Recorded in the summer of 2020 when many Australians lost their homes through raging bush fires, while koalas, wombats, flying foxes and other animals lost their habitat. All strength to the survivors, the rescuers and the helpers.

We acknowledge the palawa people, the original inhabitants who never ceded the land on which this piece was recorded (Hobart).

Anne wrote her first solo shakuhachi version of 'Displaced' in 2011 soon after the Fukushima tsunami. She plays the opening section in a folk shakuhachi style modelled on ideas from a song called 秋の山唄 Aki no Yama uta from Miyagi Prefecture just north of Fukushima. Many folk from destroyed coastal townships in Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures were relocated to temporary shelters after shifting tectonic plates violently 'displaced' the island of Honshu 2.4 metres to the east. Anne then quotes a folk melody sung by Irish convicts in Morton Bay, a brutal British penal colony in what is now the state of Queensland, Australia. These Irish prisoners were treated extremely badly, and their song ends in celebrating an unnamed aboriginal warrior who killed Captain Logan - their number one tormentor. Not only were the Irish 'displaced' to a distant land, their transportation meant that the local peoples of this continent were also 'displaced' ... and so it goes on.

A melodic highlight of the piece is when the Irish tune is 'displaced' into the modal material of the Miyagi tune... giving birth to a whole new melody. Sometimes a sudden shift can have good results...

The addition of Yyan's heartfelt singing as well as creative guitar and violin lines makes this piece just so much richer.

Recorded and mixed by Al Future at The Chapel, Hobart, Tasmania
